The Advantages Of Using An Electronic Dart Board

Submitted by: Selvin Flores

Electronic dart boards are increasingly becoming the preferred game when it comes to playing the game of darts. This type of game uses the latest technology to enable automated scoring, to display the scores of multiple players, provide a wider choice of games to play and sound effects. Most of these dart boards have surfaces that require the use of soft tip darts. These darts are ideal for use by young players because they are safer to use than steel tip darts. Some modern variations have a specially designed surface that is suitable for both steel tip and soft tip darts. With most of these dart boards, a single player can play against the computer. This is a feature that is great for training and improving your skills. Some boards come with a computer which has different skill levels and can also suggest targets for you to hit.

These dart boards usually come with a variety of games for you to play besides standard darts. They come with an average of twenty five different games to play. Some boards come with as much as fifty different games. These boards have generated a lot of reaction especially among dart enthusiasts. Some believe that the new innovation detracts from the game and is an insult to the sport. Others believe that it is a step in the right direction for promoting the game of darts.

The way electronic dart boards work is not quite as complicated as one might assume. When a dart is thrown and it hits a certain area of the board, sensors located on the board are activated triggering lasers

which scan the board. The location of the dart on the board breaks the path of the laser and this enables the sensor to pinpoint the exact location of the dart and to determine what score to give.

One of the big advantages of using electronic dart boards is the safety factor. Traditional bristle boards normally require the use of steel tip darts. These darts are very sharp and having them around children can be dangerous. The darts used with electronic dart boards have plastic tips and are therefore much safer to have around children. By using these soft tip darts, you also avoid damaging your wall with holes when darts go astray. Additionally, the score is automatically displayed on the board.

While there are obvious advantages to using these boards, they also have their disadvantages. One disadvantage is that unlike traditional boards which can be mounted anywhere, these boards require electricity to operate and must therefore be mounted near a power outlet. Some boards are also designed to operate with batteries but using this feature will probably require that you replace batteries on a regular basis, which could prove costly. Also, soft tip darts being plastic, are not as sturdy as the steel tip darts and they have a tendency to break easily. This requires that you have enough spare darts at your disposal.

The price of electronic dart boards will vary according to brand name and the features. There are many different brands on the market and the price you pay will be influenced by the type of features you want in your board. Some advanced features include heckle, optional interactive heckle, voice prompt, score display and multiple player. These are some of the features that have enhanced and distinguished the use of these boards. Having one in your home provides an excellent way to entertain yourself as well as your visitors.

Timber Framing In Britain And Ireland The Past Becomes Present

Timber framing in Britain and Ireland the past becomes present

by

Daniel ADDEY-JIBB

Timber frame construction is enjoying a robust renaissance in the UK these days and we re not talking about softwood timber framing using 2 inch by 6 inch lumber nailed together. We re talking about traditional heavy timber framing using oak or Douglas fir timber connected together using medieval-style mortice & tenon joinery.

What s the reason for the rebirth of this ancient craft of oak framing? Well part of the reason was the popularity of residential barn conversions in the mid 1970 s in England. Instead of building a new home, self-builders would purchase a property with an historic barn on the property that could be renovated into a new home, leaving the beautiful oak timber frame exposed to the inside. As conservation professional began to realize how old and important some of these barns were, the structures started to benefit from protection under the new listing process. As a result, it became more difficult to carry out these conversions, though the demand was still there.

With demand, comes supply, and companies started to pop up in the early eighties specializing in the construction of new bespoke oak framed homes, using green British Oak timber. In the twenty five years since, many more companies have entered the market, proving that heavy timber framing is a viable building method.

In parallel to the revival of traditional timber framing in the UK, was the revival of the craft in North America, happening around the same time in the late seventies and early eighties. Here in Canada, we have been building with lumber and timber since the country was first settled, so it makes perfect sense that bespoke post and beam homes have become so popular of late.

Canada s reputation as a world leader in wood construction has also meant an increased demand for our products abroad, especially in Europe. With the advent of the internet, it is relatively easy to communicate with clients and send drawings back and forth anywhere in the world. And with the cost of construction being quite a bit lower in Canada than the UK, some self builders in Britain and Ireland are choosing to contract out their timber framing to Canadian companies who deliver the timber components to the job site in sea containers.

This trading between countries in the traditional timber frame market simply reinforces the belief that this method and style of construction is here stay just like the frames themselves some of which having been dated back to the 12th century in the UK.

Water Quality Of Glaciers Do We Want It?

By Anna Hart

Water quality is an important topic, since we all drink quantities of water over our lifetimes. Even if we drink only minimally, we still want top water quality.

So what about the water quality of glaciers do we want it? Is the water quality of glaciers really pristine, as we are led to believe?

Glaciers Store About 75% of the World’s Freshwater

Freshwater contains very minimal amounts of dissolved salts, especially sodium chloride. It is found only in lakes, streams, and rivers never in oceans or seas. Glaciers have, therefore, potentially good water quality. Is that water quality pristine, though?

Glacier Bottled Water

Several water bottlers have chosen a glacier as a symbol of purity. Some use the words glacier and virgin in labeling or advertising. But water quality does not always match the symbol. According to government and industry estimates, 25 to 40 percent of all bottled water is actually bottled tap water despite pictures of glaciers!

Before recent FDA intervention, the label on one brand of bottled water read: “Alaska Premium Glacier Drinking Water: Pure Glacier Water From the Last Unpolluted Frontier, Bacteria Free”. Why was that bad if water quality in those bottles was so high? The water apparently flowed into the bottles from Public Water System #111241 in Juneau, Alaska, not from glaciers.

Some bottlers imply top water quality by referring to their waters origins as streams flowing from glaciers, or glacier-fed lakes, but in Alaska, such wording is forbidden.

If it says glacier water, it’s got to be right from the glacier without the influence of any other surface sources, says Mike Gentry, program coordinator for the Alaska State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Food Safety and Sanitation Program. He added that if it’s a blend, direct glacier water could have been mixed with other water from a stream or a lake fed by glacier.

If the label will read pure glacier water, the bottler must use water taken right from the glacier. He may not add or remove minerals, but even glacier water quality can be changed by filtering and treatments.

The label on another brand of Alaskan bottled water (unchanged at the time of writing) boasted of high water quality:

Mother Nature recycles all water. Get it from a river, get it from a spring, get it from a well, seven years ago that water was used by someone (or something) else, unless… Unless your water was stored in the Eklutna Glacier, for 23,000 years.

The implication here is that glacier water quality is unsurpassed since it has been stored away for so many years. One can almost imagine a glacier with an airtight, liquid-tight seal for ultimate protection!

The True Water Quality of Glaciers

Because of their frozen state, glaciers may have lower levels of contaminants and bacteria, but how low?

One FDA investigator noted that, aside from marketability, glaciers are a rather imperfect water source, since animals traipse across them all the time, contributing contaminants and lowering water quality.

I am not an expert on glaciers, but I do know that when Eklutna Glacier formed, however many years ago, its ice was not pure. Yes, its original snow was free of much contamination such as we know, but its snow was never chemically pure.

1. Each flake of glacial snow began as a small droplet of water or ice crystal that formed around a nucleus. The water needed a tiny particle around which it could condense. It might have used a microscopic salt crystal released into the air by an ocean wave. It might have used a particle of ash from a forest fire. It might have condensed around ash from a volcanic eruption, but each snowflake had to have that microscopic bit of material. Glacial water quality is affected by billions of old salt and ash particles.

2. Each flake of glacial snow helped scrub acids from the atmosphere. Acid rain is not new only industrial acid rain. The atmosphere contains about 350 ppm CO2, and ancient volcanic eruptions filled the atmosphere rapidly with more CO2. When our glacial snowflakes fell, they dissolved some of that CO2, and made carbonic acid snow. Glacial water quality is affected by acid rain.

3. Each flake of ancient glacial snow was further contaminated by animals. You have undoubtedly heard of wooly mammoths. You have heard, too, of migratory humans who likely hunted wooly mammoths. Can we believe that neither the ancient animals nor the hunters that stalked them ever walked on the glacier from which we are now urged to drink? As your parents may have told you, Never eat yellow snow. Glacial water quality is affected by yellow snow.

Glacial Water Quality in a High School Lab

As a former high school teacher and principal, I would have to say that any high school science lab with a distillation apparatus could supply better water quality than that found in a glacier. So do I want the water quality of glaciers? I think Ill pass.
