Wedding And Bridal Shower Favors From Wooden Spoons

By Anna Hart

Both wedding favors from wooden spoons and bridal shower favors from wooden spoons offer a variety of possibilities.

Wedding Favors from Wooden Spoons

Wedding favors from wooden spoons is a reversal on the very old Scottish and Welsh tradition of giving the bride a wooden spoon. This tradition was based on the idea that the wooden spoon was the most useful utensil in the kitchen. Giving wooden spoons to the bride would help her cook for her new husband, and later their family.

Wedding favors from wooden spoons give the spoons to guests rather than to the new bride, sometimes using them to hold place cards. We offer 7 cheap ideas below.

Bridal Shower Favors from Wooden Spoons

Bridal shower favors from wooden spoons are handled similarly the wooden spoons are given to the guests instead of to the bride-to-be.

Bridal shower favors from wooden spoons can be made quickly and cheaply. Try the 7 ideas below.

Ideas for Favors from Wooden Spoons

The price of conventional wooden spoons may quickly break your budget for bridal shower favors or wedding favors. You can get cheap wooden spoons at an online site offering craft supplies. Look for kitchen miniatures. We found 12″ long spoons at less than $0.60 each. For smaller bridal shower favors or wedding favors, we also found 4.75″ wooden spoons at less than $0.50 each.

1. Place a few pieces of candy in the bowl of the wooden spoon. Wrap the bowl portion with tulle to fit your wedding color scheme. Tie a satin ribbon bow just above the spoon’s bowl. This makes good bridal shower favors or wedding favors.

2. For bridal shower favors or wedding favors, print out the new bride’s favorite recipe on small cards. On the reverse side, print a line for guests’ names. Beneath it, explain briefly the wooden spoon tradition. Punch 2 holes at the top of each card. Run a ribbon through the holes and tie the card to the handle of the wooden spoon.

3. Combine small wooden spoons with packets of coffee, loose tea, soup mix, or bath salts for unique wedding or bridal shower favors. Tie ribbon around the two, add a tag, and you’re done!

4. Purchase mini jars of jam or honey. Tie a small wooden spoon to the neck of the jar, with a place card, for quick wedding or bridal shower favors.

5. Whimsical bridal shower favors or wedding favors can be made with small wooden spoons dressed as brides and grooms. Paint “bride” spoons white and glue a skirt of white tulle to the handle just below the bowl. On the bowl, glue tiny wiggle eyes, pom-pom noses, and a small yarn mouth. Add a second bit of tulle to the bowl top for a veil. Tie a bow where the handle meets the bowl. Paint “groom” spoons black, and proceed in the same way, using black cloth in place of tulle to fashion a “tux” and hat.

6. Simple wedding and bridal shower favors from wooden spoons can be prepared quickly beginning with the small size wooden spoons from craft supply stores. Print out pretty cards that say “Love without Measure.” Use the reverse side for placecards, if desired. Or print the bridal couple’s names and the date on the reverse side. Tie the cards to the spoon necks with ribbon.

7. Bridal shower favors and wedding favors from wooden spoons can be patterned after Welsh lovespoons. Lovespoons can be purchased online, but only by those who have a large budget for favors. Create your own wedding of bridal shower favors from wooden spoons by purchasing a quantity of 4.75″ wooden spoons. Purchase painted wooden cutouts, available in shapes of hearts, arrows, doves, etc. Glue the wooden cutouts securely to handle or bowl of wooden spoon. Tie with a ribbon and tag.

Bridal Party Ideas

Bridal shower favors and wedding favors are not the only uses for the wooden spoon. Present each member of the bridal party, as well as the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom with their own “lucky” wooden spoons. Use larger wooden spoons for these gifts than for bridal shower favors. Cover each spoon with satin in the color of the bride’s gown. Glue braid with tiny pearls down the length of the handle. Glue lace around the edge of the spoon’s bowl. Glue a loop of blue ribbon at the end of the handle so the spoon can be hung. For an even more memorable spoon, glue a tiny bride and groom or double wedding bells to the satin bowl of the spoon. Find them at craft supplies sites.

Wildfires still burn in Oklahoma, Texas

Wildfires still burn in Oklahoma, Texas

Wednesday, January 4, 2006

NORMAN, Okla. – National Weather Service officials are warning of continued fire dangers throughout Oklahoma and Texas due to serious drought conditions.

More than 220 homes and businesses have been destroyed by fire in Oklahoma since Nov. 1, according to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management. Wildfires in 29 of the state’s 77 counties have claimed more than 360,000 acres. Meanwhile, officials in Texas say 238 homes and 254,555 acres have been lost to wildfires in that state since Dec. 26.

Unseasonably warm weather and wind gusts of up to 40 mph have combined to make an already dangerous situation worse across the Southern Plains, which also include parts of Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico, said Jason Levit of the National Storm Prediction Center in Norman.

“The region also continues to remain in a severe to extreme drought situation,” Levit said. “Dry surface vegetation will continue to serve as an excellent fuel for any fires that develop.”

Some dry areas, such as the Rocky Mountains and Great Lakes, may soon see some much-needed rain. Levit says the already fire-ravaged Southern Plains will have no such luck, however, and people should be aware of the severe danger that will continue to threaten the region.

In Oklahoma, state authorities and the National Guard have established a command post in Shawnee, about 40 miles east of Oklahoma City, where they have been joined by officials from the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the National Weather Service.

The state was granted access to relief from the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Dec. 28, said Gov. Brad Henry. The Governor requested fire management grants to help cover expenses related to the wildfires that began the previous day. FEMA’s approval means funds are now available to local governments and volunteer fire departments that responded to the blazes in Hughes and Seminole counties. Requests involving nine other counties were approved in the days that followed.

Fires hit the northeastern part of Oklahoma City, the state’s capital and largest city, on Sunday. Fires were said to have destroyed 20 homes over the weekend.

A National Guard helicopter and firefighters from North Carolina were sent to battle a blaze near the town of Davis, in south-central Oklahoma, on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the BIA sent two airplanes to help fight a fire near Eufaula, in eastern Oklahoma. Three other BIA aircraft aided crews fighting fires near Wewoka, in central Oklahoma, and additional fires were reported near Knowles, Oklahoma City, Ponca City and Tishmingo.

Authorities said additional National Guard helicopters and Forest Service planes are available to battle other fires as they break out.In addition to teams from North Carolina, other firefighters from Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee have arrived and are being stationed throughout the state.

The Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Office said one man has died from injuries sustained from recent wildfires. A 68-year-old Hughes County man died Dec. 28 from thermal burns and smoke inhalation. The death is in addition to that of a 68-year-old Carter County woman who died last month while trying to use a garden hose to save her home from being consumed by flames.

The governor’s office said the state continues to await word on a request for a federal disaster declaration made Friday. A disaster declaration by President George W. Bush would qualify Oklahoma for federal funds to place firefighters ahead of where blazes are burning, and would provide temporary housing assistance and low-interest loans for those whose homes or businesses have been destroyed.

Texas authorities say they have 92 aircraft and 650 state workers working to fight fires, and have been joined by crews from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. The U.S. Forest Service is also helping the state to handle the emergency.

Despite efforts, wildfires on Monday claimed nearly the entire town of Ringgold, destroying 45 buildings that comprised about 80 percent of the town.

5 Social Media Marketing Strategy Tips

By Aaron Hoos

Until recently, businesses had well-established “rules of engagement” that dictated how to talk to prospects, customers, vendors and competitors. But with the recent ascent of social media into the business arena, those rules of engagement have been set aside and new rules are being written. Business owners who get these social media marketing strategy tips and actively participate in social media marketing can enjoy the benefits. Business owners who ignore these tips but try to participate in social media marketing anyway, will fail.

If your business is thinking about participating in the social media phenomenon, here are 5 marketing strategy tips you need to know before you start:

Marketing strategy tips #1: Social media is not about you. Don’t jump into the world of social media to talk about yourself. Rather, join because you want to hear from other people. Even if you never talk about yourself, you can still derive tremendous value from listening to your prospects and customers and adjusting your business based on what you hear. Create rules for yourself about how often you want to engage others before you mention something about yourself. Some people follow a 10:1 ratio of talking about others ten times as much as they talk about themselves.

Marketing strategy tips #2: Be personable. It’s so easy to default to the original rules of engagement, which tended to be impersonal. But social media isn’t impersonal. It’s very personal. Be willing to share some of yourself. Decide what you’re willing to share and what you aren’t willing to share, but be willing to share something.

Marketing strategy tips #3: Be professional. For so long, businesses equated impersonal with professional. But that’s not the case. You can be personable while still being professional. Professionalism in social media means not trashing your competition or making inflated claims. It means not dominating the conversation. It means helping customers not forcing them.

Marketing strategy tips #4: Engage others. Social media is a medium of engagement. People aren’t just listening, they’re participating. So take part. Ask others. Involve others. Listen and respond. Keep the conversation going.

Marketing strategy tips #5: Enjoy it! This is so important. If you don’t enjoy participating in social media then stop doing it. If you don’t like it, you won’t engage others and you’ll end up doing what a lot of businesses do create a cycle of pre-written, timed-release messages that don’t do anything other than annoy. Just because social media is popular right now doesnt mean you have to participate. Enjoy it or find something you do enjoy.

Want to know the best way to succeed at social media? Just follow the same rules of engagement and etiquette that you might have at a dinner party or cocktail party. Listen to others, share a bit of yourself, be professional, engage other people, and enjoy the conversation. The scenario is very similar it just so happens that with social media, people aren’t in the same room.

Use these marketing strategy tips to help you grow your business with social media.

Reports: Taliban leader Mullah Dadullah killed in Afghanistan

Reports: Taliban leader Mullah Dadullah killed in Afghanistan

Sunday, May 13, 2007

Mullah Dadullah, also known as Mullah Dadullah Akhund, a Taliban leader, radical Islamic cleric and military commander, has been killed in southern Afghanistan after an encounter with Afghan and Allied forces, according to the Afghan government.

Saeed Ansari, an Afghan intelligence spokesman said, “Mullah Dadullah has been killed and his body is in Kandahar.”

The governor of Kandahar, Asadullah Khalid told Reuters: “Yes, he was killed last night and right now I have his body before me.” He added that Dadullah was killed in Helmand Province.

NATO spokesperson Major John Thomas confirmed that Dadullah has been killed. “We fully expect Mullah Dadullah will be replaced in time, but for now the insurgency has received a serious blow,” Thomas said.

Mullah Dadullah was frequently seen in videos with a machine gun and artillery in his clerical clothing along with his turban. However, it is known that he attended madrassas before joining the fight against the Soviet forces.

Last month, Mullah Dadullah gave an interview in which he said that Osama bin Laden was alive and was coordinating the activities of the Taliban. In 2005, Mullah Dadullah vowed, “The mujahideen will not lay down their arms unless the Americans leave and an Islamic state is established.”

Several episodes of ‘Orange is the New Black’ released prematurely by hacker

Several episodes of ‘Orange is the New Black’ released prematurely by hacker

Tuesday, May 2, 2017

A hacker, or group of hackers, operating under the alias of The Dark Overlord uploaded ten episodes of Netflix’s web TV series Orange is the New Black on Friday and Saturday on The Pirate Bay after they said the online streaming service failed to meet their demands. Netflix had planned to release the season on June 9.

According to The New York Times, the unreleased content from the upcoming fifth season of Orange is the New Black was likely stolen from a postproduction company Larson Studios, based in Los Angeles. Netflix in a statement said, “A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved.” In a tweet on Saturday, the hacker said, “Who is next on the list? FOX, IFC, NAT GEO, and ABC. Oh, what fun we’re all going to have. We’re not playing any games anymore.”

The hacker tweeted about uploading the first episode on The Pirate Bay on Saturday saying, “Let’s try to be a bit more direct, Netflix”. The hacker allegedly demanded an amount of money which they publicly described as “modest”, from Netflix for not releasing the episodes prematurely. The New York Times reported that the final three episodes were not pirated since the security breach occurred before the postproduction studio was handed those episodes. In January, the hacker erased the data from the servers of a Muncie-based charity called Little Red Door Cancer Services of East Central Indiana demanding 50 bitcoins to restore their data, which was estimated to be about US$43,000.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is reportedly investigating this cyber crime. Netflix has more than 100 million subscribers, CEO Reed Hastings announced recently. Variety noted that Netfilx’s shares experienced a 0.57% loss on the day the first episode was uploaded by the hacker.

Experts: obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu

Experts: obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu
No Comments »

Friday, September 8, 2006

From September 3 to 8, experts gathered at the 10th International Congress on Obesity in Sydney, Australia, to discuss what they call the worldwide “obesity epidemic”. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 billion people in the world today are overweight, and 300 million of those are obese. “Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for serious diet-related chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer“, a WHO fact sheet states. According to AP, experts at the conference “have warned that obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu, and will easily overwhelm the world’s health care systems if urgent action is not taken”.

Of particular concern is the large number of overweight children. Dr. Stephan Rossner from Sweden’s Karolinska University Hospital, a leading obesity expert who was present at the conference, has warned that as a result of the increasing number of overweight children, “we will have, within a decade or two, a number of young people who are on kidney dialysis. There will not be organs for everybody”. UK-based International Obesity Task Force has said that junk food manufacturers target children, for example, through Internet advertising, chat rooms, text messages, and “advergames” on websites. Politicians are not doing enough to address the problem of obesity, including childhood obesity, the experts said.

According to Wikipedia, examples of junk food include, but are not limited to: hamburgers, pizza, candy, soda, and salty foods like potato chips and french fries. A well-known piece of junk food is the Big Mac. The US version of just one Big Mac burger contains 48% of calories from fat, 47% US Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of fat, 52% RDA of saturated fat, 26% RDA of cholesterol, 42% RDA of sodium, and little nutritional value. It also has 18% of calories from protein. According to WHO, most people need only about 5% calories from protein. Staples such as rice, corn, baked potatoes, pinto beans, as well as fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, oranges, and strawberries, provide more than this required amount of protein without the unhealthy amounts of fats or sodium, without cholesterol, and with plenty of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Both WHO and the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define overweight in adults as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or above, and obese as a BMI of 30 or above. To combat overweight and obesity, WHO recommends that, among other things, people should be taking the following steps

 • eating more fruit and vegetables, as well as nuts and whole grains;
 • engaging in daily moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes;
 • cutting the amount of fatty, sugary foods in the diet;
 • moving from saturated animal-based fats to unsaturated vegetable-oil based fats.

Bush Administration changes official position on legitimacy of Qur’an desecration allegations

">
Bush Administration changes official position on legitimacy of Qur’an desecration allegations
No Comments »

Saturday, June 4, 2005

After an investigation of allegations that Islam’s holy book the Qu’ran was mishandled in front of inmates at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Bush administration has acknowledged the credibility of some of these reports. According to Robert Burns of the Associated Press, U.S. military officials acknowledged that, “a Muslim holy book was splashed with urine,” and “a detainee’s Quran was deliberately kicked and another’s was stepped on.” The US government first denied a specific report that the Qu’ran had been flushed down a toilet at the prison facility, but on Friday agreed that similar allegations were indeed true.

On May 16, Newsweek magazine apologized to the victims of deadly riots that ensued due to a Newsweek article stating that U.S. officials defiled the Qur’an. White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan criticized Newsweek’s initial response to the incident, saying it was “puzzling.” Later that day, Newsweek retracted the story, which the White House said was a “good first step”.

On May 20, the International Red Cross (IRC) revealed in a rare public announcement that it had documented and reported to the United States credible information concerning desecration of the Qur’an by Guantanamo Bay personnel. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman, acknowledged that allegations were made on “rare occasions” but were uncorroborated. Simon Schorno, a Red Cross spokesman, disputed the Pentagon’s denial saying, “All information we received were corroborated allegations.” He added that, “We certainly corroborated mentions of the events by detainees themselves,” and that “the ICRC considers such reports “very seriously, and very carefully, and [we] document everything.”

Scott McClellan explained in a press conference that the White House is not trying to tell Newsweek what to print. McClellan said, “Look, this report caused serious damage to the image of the United States abroad. And Newsweek has said that they got it wrong. I think Newsweek recognizes the responsibility they have. We appreciate the step that they took by retracting the story. Now we would encourage them to move forward and do all that they can to help repair the damage that has been done by this report. And that’s all I’m saying. But, no, you’re absolutely right, it’s not my position to get into telling people what they can and cannot report.”

On May 25, Amnesty International called for the shutdown on Guantanamo Bay due to numerous human rights violations, saying “The ‘war on terror’ appeared more effective in eroding international human rights principles than in countering international ‘terrorism’.” Amnesty International’s view was shared by both the International Red Cross (IRC) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The IRC has said it reported to the U.S. government detainee’s reports of desecration of the Qur’an. In the foreword of the report, written by Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Khan, Guantanamo was compared to a Soviet-era gulag in that it is “entrenching the practice of arbitrary and indefinite detention in violation of international law”.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan responded saying the report’s allegations were “ridiculous and unsupported by the facts. The United States is leading the way when it comes to protecting human rights and promoting human dignity. We have liberated 50 million people in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have worked to advance freedom and democracy in the world so that people are governed under a rule of law and that there are… protections in place for minority rights, that women’s rights are advanced so that women can fully participate in societies where now they cannot”, as well as supporting the fight against AIDS in Africa.

About the allegations of abuse at Guantanamo, which McClellan has previously called isolated incidents, he said, “We hold people accountable when there is abuse. We take steps to prevent it from happening again, and we do so in a very public way for the world to see that we lead by example, and that we do have values that we hold very dearly and believe in.”

On May 31, U.S. President George W. Bush dismissed the human rights report as “absurd” for its harsh criticism of U.S. treatment of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying the allegations were made by prisoners “who hate America.” “It’s an absurd allegation. The United States is a country that promotes freedom around the world,” Bush said of the Amnesty International report.

William F. Schulz, executive director of Amnesty International USA, defended the report, saying, “What is ‘absurd’ is President Bush’s attempt to deny the deliberate policies of his administration.” and “What is ‘absurd’ and indeed outrageous is the Bush administration’s failure to undertake a full independent investigation”. Irene Khan also responded saying, “The administration’s response has been that our report is absurd, that our allegations have no basis, and our answer is very simple: if that is so, open up these detention centres, allow us and others to visit them.”

And, on Friday, the U.S. military released the results of their investigation and confirmed that in 5 separate incidents, American guards at the Guantánamo Bay prison “mishandled” the Islamic holy book. However, they stress that guards were usually “respectful” of the Qur’an. One incident involved splashing a Koran with urine by urinating near an air vent while others involved kicking, stepping on and writing in Qur’ans.

Brigadier-General Jay Hood, the commander of the jail, looked into the allegations, published and then retracted by Newsweek, that American personnel flushed a Qur’an down a toilet. He said that the inquiry did not find any evidence supporting this particular allegation. “The inquiry found no credible evidence that a member of the Joint Task Force at Guantanamo Bay ever flushed a Qur’an down a toilet. This matter is considered closed.”

Four year-old boy battered with a brick in East Yorkshire

Four year-old boy battered with a brick in East Yorkshire

Saturday, August 26, 2006

In what Humberside Police are describing as a “nasty” attack, a four year-old boy was left with a fractured skull after being battered with a brick. The incident happened on wasteland close to the child’s home in Hessle, East Yorkshire.

Charlie Davis was discovered by a couple on Thursday. He was in a puddle of blood and part of his ear was hanging off; doctors at Hull Royal Infirmary later performed surgery to repair it. He is still in hospital, and doctors say that his brain is not injured, despite having a fractured skull.

A spokeswoman from Humberside Police said: “This little boy has suffered a nasty attack and has some horrible injuries.”

Police think Charlie, who was playing with a friend, was molested by a male youth. His injuries suggest that he dragged the child across the ground, kicked him in the face, tied him to a tree and struck him with a brick.

The police spokeswoman added that police are pursuing several lines of inquiry. “There has been information suggesting possible suspects and these form one of the lines of inquiry being pursued.”

The assault is thought to have happened before lunchtime on Thursday next to Station Road which is near the Hull to Hessle railway line. “It is currently unclear how the child got to the area. He may have gone of his own accord, he might have been chased there or he may have been taken by someone against his will,” said the police spokeswoman.

Charlie, who was meant to be going on holiday with his family today, is too disturbed to talk to detectives about the incident. The spokeswoman said: “We do understand that the victim was struck with a brick which has resulted in his injuries. But, clearly, until police can get an account from the four-year-old victim it is not possible to confirm any more details of the incident.”
