HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

An HIV-positive man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday, one day after being convicted of harassment of a public servant for spitting into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas, Texas police officer in May 2006. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that no one has ever contracted HIV from saliva, and a gay-rights and AIDS advocacy group called the sentence excessive.

A Dallas County jury concluded that Willie Campbell’s act of spitting on policeman Dan Waller in 2006 constituted the use of his saliva as a deadly weapon. The incident occurred while Campbell, 42, was resisting arrest while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

“He turns and spits. He hits me in the eye and mouth. Then he told me he has AIDS. I immediately began looking for something to flush my eyes with,” said Waller to The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Waller responded after a bystander reported seeing an unconscious male lying outside a building. Dallas County prosecutors stated that Campbell attempted to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication.

It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears.

Prosecutors said that Campbell yelled that he was innocent during the trial, and claimed a police officer was lying. Campbell’s lawyer Russell Heinrichs said that because he had a history of convictions including similarly attacking two other police officers, biting inmates, and other offenses, he was indicted under a habitual offender statute. The statute increased his minimum sentence to 25 years in prison. Because the jury ruled that Campbell’s saliva was used as a deadly weapon, he will not be eligible for parole until completing at least half his sentence.

If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.

The organization Lambda Legal (Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund), which advocates for individuals living with HIV, says that saliva should not be considered a deadly weapon. Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the sentence. “It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears,” said Anderson.

The Dallas County prosecutor who handled the trial, Jenni Morse, said that the deadly weapon finding was justified. “No matter how minuscule, there is some risk. That means there is the possibility of causing serious bodily injury or death,” said Morse. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins stated: “If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.”

Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

A page at the CDC’s website, HIV and Its Transmission, states: “HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients.” The subsection “Saliva, Tears, and Sweat” concludes that: “Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.” On Friday the Dallas County Health Department released a statement explaining that HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, or transfusion from an infected blood product.

FBI arrests four in alleged plot to bomb Bronx synagogues, shoot down plane

FBI arrests four in alleged plot to bomb Bronx synagogues, shoot down plane

Friday, May 22, 2009

United States law enforcement officials announced the arrest Thursday of four men in connection with a plot to blow up two synagogues in The Bronx, a borough of New York City, and shoot down military airplanes flying out of the Stewart Air National Guard Base.

The men allegedly placed car bombs wired to cell phones outside the Riverdale Temple and nearby Riverdale Jewish Center in the Bronx area of the city. New York City Police Department commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said one of the suspects placed what he believed were homemade bombs, or improvised explosive devices, in separate vehicles parked outside the synagogues. The other three suspects served as lookouts.

According to a joint statement released by the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, the FBI and the New York City Police Department, the men were returning to the vehicle and were planning to attack aircraft at the Air National Guard base at Stewart airport in Newburgh, with Stinger surface-to-air guided missiles when law enforcement stopped them.

As the men were returning to the vehicle, the signal was given for the arrest. An 18-wheel New York City Police Department vehicle blocked the end of the street. The FBI informer also served as the driver of the suspects’ vehicle. Another armored vehicle arrived, and officers from the department’s Emergency Service Unit, according to witnesses, smashed the blackened windows of the SUV, removed the men from the vehicle, and handcuffed them on the ground. None offered resistance.

The men had previously conducted surveillance of military planes at the Air National Guard base including taking photographs.

Both the car bombs and the missiles were actually fakes given to the plotters with the help of an informant for the FBI, who posed as a Pakistani militant affiliated with Al-Qaeda. Each of the two homemade bombs was equipped with about 37 pounds of inert material labeled as C-4 plastic explosives, but the devices had been ‘totally disabled by the FBI,” and “there was no danger to anyone,” Commissioner Kelly said.

“While the bombs these terrorists attempted to plant tonight were – unbeknownst to them – fake, this latest attempt to attack our freedoms shows that the homeland security threats against New York City are sadly all too real,” said Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City.

The suspects are reported to be four Muslim men; three U.S. citizens, one Haitian. The Daily News reports that three of the men are jail-house converts to Islam.

James Cromitie, 53, the reported leader, claims that his parents live in Afghanistan and told the FBI informant that he was angry about the U.S. military killing Muslims in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He had lived in Brooklyn and had a record of “as many as 27 arrests” for minor crimes “both upstate and in New York City.”

The other suspects are David Williams, Onta Williams, and Laguerre Payen a native of Haiti.

At the arraignment held Thursday, attorney for Laguerre Payen, Marilyn Reader, told the court that Payen has “a very low borderline” intelligence quotient and receives medication for schizophrenia.

Send And Receive Text Messages Online

By John Clayton

There’s now a new and easy way to send and receive text messages online. All you have to do is download a software or a text messaging client which lets you send and receive text messages on your computer, laptop, iPod or iPhone; and you can instantly send and receive text messages anywhere in the world even without a phone! The caveat though is that you need to have an internet connection.

This type of messaging system works just like instant messaging. But instead of PC to PC conversation, the software or the messaging client allows you to have a PC to mobile phone conversation with anyone you want to talk to. While you can send as many messages as you want, just like in instant messaging, there is a limit to the number of words or characters you can send. Most of these text messaging clients also double as instant messaging software, allowing you to exchange instant messages with buddies who are also online.

Advantages to using online text messaging

You can send and receive text message online for free. Most clients are free, but there are some that charge a flat rate or a subscription fee. You can search the internet and look for a free service or use one that has a subscription but better services and more options.

You can forward messages sent to you while you’re offline straight to your mobile phone.

You can sign-up using your mobile number or email address. No more need for pesky usernames to remember.

You can reply to messages you’ve received on your phone when your mobile phone runs out of credit by replying online.

You can send email messages on your mobile phone or send text messages from your email account.

If you don’t have a mobile phone, you can use online text messaging so you can send text messages to others.

Allows you to send international texts for free (or at cheaper rates)

Disadvantages

If you lose internet connection or have no PC to access your account, you cannot send and receive text messages online.

Some services charges the recipients obscene amounts.

Privacy and security may be an issue.

Other things which you may want to know

Online text messaging should in no way be used as a substitute for emergency calls or in emergency situations. In case of emergency, call directly using your landline or mobile phone.

While reliable, there will be instances when your messages will fail to be delivered. This may be due to problems with the mobile phone carriers, or connectivity issues with your PC. Contact the service provider directly through their contact us page to report the issue.

Always check how much your recipients will be charged if they do receive your messages. It may be free sending the messages from your end of the line but your recipients may be getting exorbitant fees for receiving those messages. Consult the FAQ of the online text messaging service you’re using to be sure just how much it’ll cost your friends or relatives.

US National Football League to fine teams if athletes kneel during national anthem

US National Football League to fine teams if athletes kneel during national anthem
No Comments »

Friday, May 25, 2018

On Wednesday, the US National Football League (NFL) announced adopting a new policy of fining the clubs if their athletes knelt during the national anthem. Per the policy, athletes who do not wish to stand for the anthem are now permitted to stay in the locker room. Under the new policy, the commissioner can “impose appropriate discipline on league personnel who do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.”

According to commissioner Roger Goodell, in their meeting in Atlanta NFL owners reached a unanimous decision. In the statement, Goodell said, “It was unfortunate that on-field protests created a false perception among many that thousands of NFL players were unpatriotic […] This is not and was never the case.” Per the earlier policy, athletes had to be present on the sidelines of the field during the anthem.

Since 2016, when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling during the pre-match national anthem in a protest against racial discrimination, police brutality and shooting of African-Americans by policemen, multiple athletes have joined the protests taking a knee when the US national anthem — The Star-Spangled Banner — was played. Kaepernick then said, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour”.

The NFL Players Association said the NFL did not consult them before announcing the policy. The day before the NFL’s statement, the clubs agreed to donate 90 million US dollars (USD) to initiatives for social justice.

Eric Reid, a former teammate of Kaepernick who also took a knee during the national anthem, said, “I needed to use a platform to speak out for other people who didn’t have a voice. So I joined Colin in protesting the issues in this country, which include police brutality, systemic oppression of black and brown people”. He added, “This is not about disrespecting the military or the anthem. This is a way for me to bring awareness around these issues in our country.”

The new policy now allows the clubs to devise their own provisions for fining or suspending the players. New York Jets’ chairperson Christopher Johnson said, “There will be no club fines or suspensions or any sort of repercussions. If the team gets fined, that’s just something I’ll have to bear.”

Owner of San Francisco 49ers Jed York abstained from voting for the NFL policy in Atlanta.

Former US president Barack Obama, in September 2016, said Kaepernick was “exercising his constitutional right”. Current US president Donald Trump, in September 2017, called the athletes who knelt during the national anthem unpatriotic and “disgraceful”. Trump also said, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired.'”

Regarding the new policy, Malcolm Jenkins, a defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles, said, “What NFL owners did today was thwart the players’ constitutional rights to express themselves and use our platform to draw attention to social injustices like racial inequality in our country. Everyone loses when voices get stifled.” His teammate Chris Long, who donated USD one million to charity last season, wrote on Twitter, “This is fear of a diminished bottom line. It’s also a fear of a president turning his base against a corporation. This is not patriotism. Don’t get it confused.”

Retired quarterback Sage Rosenfels tweeted saying, “I hope the NFL decides to completely stop all concession stand sales during the anthem as well. We wouldn’t want people buying a $10 beer and an $8 hot dog during our sacred anthem. All TV camera crews must stop filming and direct attention at the flag too. Just seems fair.” He later added, “Forced patriotism is the opposite of freedom.”

About the new policy, Trump told Fox News, “You have to stand, proudly, for the national anthem or you shouldn’t be playing. You shouldn’t be there. Maybe you shouldn’t be in the country”.

The NFL Player’s Association said the union will “review the new ‘policy’ and challenge any aspect of it that is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement.”

Most air conditioning systems are designed to last for a long time. However, the lifespan of an air conditioning system can quickly be cut short when a homeowner fails to have it properly maintained by a professional. Here are a few other benefits homeowners can reap from regular HVAC maintenance:

Financial analysts say Google is planning an e-wallet service that could eventually compete with eBay’s payment service PayPal. Google has not confirmed the development.

The rumor is a first sign of Google’s expected expansion of revenue sources to capitalize on its advertising customer base and search-engine traffic. What form that expansion will take has been a hotly debated subject for the company whose stock valuation momentarily made it the world’s biggest media company on June 7, 2005. Even Microsoft has been mentioned as a possible future competitor.

Ebay’s stock valuation dipped more than 2% on the news. Paypal currently accounts for one-fifth of the company’s revenues. But one business analyst saw potential benefit for Paypal[1], depending on exactly how the “Google Wallet” takes shape. The uncertainty underlined the lack of substantive information behind the rumor.

According to the New York Times, the CEO of a major online merchant, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, was approached by Google to take part in this service. Steve Langdon, a Google spokesperson, declined to comment.

Monday, February 19, 2007

Thirteen Canadian soldiers sustained minor injuries yesterday when three light armoured vehicles (LAV III) smashed into each other in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The LAV IIIs are reported to have sustained minor damage.

Seven soldiers were taken to the Canadian-run provincial reconstruction base medical clinic. Six soldiers were transferred by air to the NATO hospital in Kandahar airfield.

The soldiers, who arrived in Afghanistan this month, are from the 2nd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment and reserve units around Atlantic Canada..

“Our soldiers receive excellent training before they’re deployed to theatre, but I don’t think anything can quite fully prepare anyone for the nature of the roads here in Kandahar,” said a spokesman for the Canadian Forces, Major Dale MacEachern.

They are now safe and will return to their units in a couple of days.

Once Upon A Time The Princess, The Queen And She

Submitted by: Reggie Odom

Once upon a time, on the morning of the last day of the 3-day, Personal Growth Brand Authenticity workshop, SHE was one among many to come in the early morning to sit at the feet of the Princess of Brand Authenticity (also a guru in the mind of her subjects), before the official program began. She had come early because the brand she took on yesterday, with enthusiasm, but without wholeheartedness, was not IT.

While SHE didn t know what IT was, she did know a lot about what a brand is. She knew that it was more than a logo, or a tag line. She knew that her brand was really about her soul s purpose, expressed through her business. She knew that it was about the business of the heart and being fully alive. And she knew that is was about authenticity, which had been an aspect of her mission as she knew it since the mid-90 s.

It was 8:15 when SHE arrived; the official start was 9:00. Someone was already working with the Princess and there were plenty more in waiting. Her roommate, Linda was next to have a go with the guru and experienced her POP, meaning she got IT. She connected with her brand and all that meant. She watched Linda settle into alignment. By the way, Linda s brand wasn t the one she had just spent a few thousand dollars creating on her web site and promo materials. But getting IT was more important than the money she had just spent.

Someone else immediately jumped in without a pause while HER hand was just lifting from her lap. SHE looked at her watch from the edge of her seat. The issue for her was that she usually paused in between things, wanting to have the right ideas and words prepared, fearing what others would think if she didn t have it all together. At that moment, she had a flashback to a time when she had just jumped in her enthusiasm was so on fire that she flung her hand in the air without forethought. She was called on by the prominent speaker, but her mind went blank and the words froze in her throat. She was silent, not to mention she felt totally humiliated.

That experience created an interesting alchemy, for the worst. She made the decision in this first year of her life as a professional that she would never put herself in a situation to be humiliated again. While she had been respected and done some really good things in her professional life, that decision was a major ingredient in a formula that had kept her playing small. Okay, I m about transformation, she thought. That was then, and this is now. Time to let this one go.

Besides that, time was running short. It was the last day and she was spending a lot of money to be here. But at this moment, money, which had been one of the core dramas in her life, was not the issue. The issue for her was both her voice and her core raison d etre no small things.

With five minutes left, she took a deep breath and jumped in, raising her hand boldly. Yesterday, she said to the Princess Guru, I said my brand was Being Brilliant, which is a great brand. But that s not IT.

I know, said the Princess Guru, looking at her with great love.

SHE began to talk to the Princess and the rest of the she s and he s in the room about her vision. She knew she was speaking clearly and with more intention. She was putting more of herself forth. She could feel the silence in the room she knew she had everyone s complete attention. Something really important was happening here. She knew she was being seen and heard at a profound level. She knew that what she was doing here was having a significant impact on the room, but But what is IT? she asked. I don t know what it is.

You do. the scribe said. I ve written it down twice. You ve already said it.

What did I say? SHE asked. At key times during high school, and later on in her life as a professional, she had often spoken in and in front of plenty of groups, making a significant impact and hearing about it from others. More often than not, she didn t remember what she had said.

The scribe replied, You said you help people step into their greatness.

SHE knew this was true. This was IT essentially, but she also knew there was another part to this. She knew that she had to first step into her own greatness.

The Queen of Bodacious Breakthroughs stood up in the back of the group, which by now was most of the 50+ participants. Yes, there was a Queen at the retreat who had actually claimed being Queen of Bodacious Breakthroughs – just the day before.

The Queen stood up, all 73 bodacious inches of her, and said, I have a domain that is Stepping into Your Greatness . It s yours if you want it.

SHE turned around to face the Queen, and said in her most gracious and humble Southern way, How can I turn down a gift like that?

NO, said the Queen. If you want it, you have to take it.

SHE knew what the Queen meant. She stood up, faced her front on, and then stepped forward toward the Queen in her own most natural and bold regality, I want it! she proclaimed and stood firmly. In those moments she had energetically, fully stepped into her own greatness.

The energy was electric in the room.

Before you take it, the Queen said, You have to tell the Princess.

SHE turned around, faced the Princess, and said, Step into Your Greatness. The room burst into applause.

SHE had stepped through a door through which she knew she would never return the journey backwards would not be safe. The journey forward from here was yet to be determined.

One thing she did know, as she reflected on her experience later that day, was that she had spoken, stood, and stepped forward for everyone in the room. And in the bigger picture, that s a part of what greatness is all about – the story continues.

Questions to explore:

1. What are the decisions and other ingredients of a formula that has kept you playing small?

2. What is the IT in your life that simply hasn t fallen into place, and is calling you to do something different?

3. What does greatness mean to you?

4. When have you stepped into your greatness?

5. Are you ready to step into your greatness – where playing small is no longer an option – and close the door behind you?

6. If the answer is yes to #5, what will it take for you to do that?

Remember: Step into your greatness now – where playing small is no longer an option! It’s the most natural thing you’ll ever do.
