Porsche and Volkswagen family owners agreed on Wednesday to merge the companies, creating one large “integrated car-manufacturing group”.

“In the final structure, 10 brands shall stand below an integrative leading company alongside each other, whereby the independence of all brands and explicitly also of Porsche shall be ensured,” said the Porsche Automobil Holding SE company.

A task force has been set into place to discuss details of the merger over the next month. This task force embraces managers and representatives from the works council of both companies as well as the state of Lower Saxony.

Porsche based in Stuttgart, Germany was previously controlled by the Porsche and Piëch families voting stock.

Porsche had previously tried to raise its 51% shares in Volkswagen to 75% in a take-over bid. A special German law grants Lower Saxony enough power to veto decisions with its 20% share in the VW company.

“I’m certain that we can and will advance our partnership in the difficult current year 2009, [and] have the stuff to develop the powerhouse of the international automobile industry” said Martin Winterkorn chairman of the Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen AG) and Scania AB.

The merger would help Porsche with its €9 billion debt which it incurred partially due to the ailing economy as well as its attempt at a takeover bid.

US military commander in Afghanistan dismissed by President Obama

Thursday, June 24, 2010

General Stanley McChrystal, the top military commander for the US army in Afghanistan, was dismissed by president Barack Obama Wednesday, over controversial comments he made in an interview with a magazine.

McChrystal will be replaced by General David Petraeus. The move was made after McChrystal and the president held a thirty-minute meeting Wednesday to discuss McChrystal’s comments to the Rolling Stone magazine, in which he was portrayed as dismissive about the administration’s handling of the Afghanistan war.

In one comment, when asked about vice-president Joe Biden, the general replied with “Are you asking about Vice-President Biden? Who’s that?”; in another remark, he mentions an email from the US’ special Afghanistan and Pakistan representative, Richard Holbrook, saying: “Oh, not another e-mail from Holbrooke […] I don’t even want to open it.” One of the McChrystal’s aides also described national security adviser James Jones as being a “clown… stuck in 1985”.

Obama commented that the move was “a change in personnel but not a change in policy”. “I believe it is the right decision for our national security. I don’t make this decision based on any difference in policy with General McChrystal […] nor do I make this decision out of any sense of personal insult,” he said, commenting also: “The conduct represented in the recently published article does not meet the standard that should be set by a commanding general. It undermines the civilian control of the military that is at the core of our democratic system.”

McChrystal, meanwhile, released a statement regarding the incident: “I strongly support the president’s strategy in Afghanistan and am deeply committed to our coalition forces, our partner nations, and the Afghan people. It was out of respect for this commitment — and a desire to see the mission succeed — that I tendered my resignation.”

The general’s assistant who organised the Rolling Stone interview, Duncan Boothby, also resigned over the article.

Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, meanwhile responded to Obama’s move, saying he believed McChrystal was the best commander in the nine years since the US began operations in his country.

“General McChrystal was an important and trusted partner for the Afghan government and Afghan people and we hoped this wouldn’t happen,” said Waheed Omer, a spokesman for Karzai. “However, this is an internal matter for the US government and we respect the decision of President Obama. We are looking forward to working with General Petraeus, a very experienced soldier, who President Karzai knows well.”

Computer glitch delays online tax filing in Canada

Computer glitch delays online tax filing in Canada

Thursday, March 8, 2007

Computer systems used by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the handling of tax filing data for Canadians have been temporarily shutdown due to infrastructure problems.[1] A March 7 article in the Toronto Star[2] states that due to errors in the electronic filing system, Canada Revenue Agency will be unable to accept any tax filings electronically or corrections to prior filings.

A fact sheet from the CRA [3] states that “until the problem is resolved, we cannot process returns filed on paper, or returns filed electronically before the system interruption. Refunds will be delayed until processing is resumed”.

A check of the taxing authority’s website[4] regarding the issue states “We have temporarily shut down public access to electronic services to ensure the integrity of taxpayer information.” and that “We have now traced the source of the problem to software maintenance conducted on March 4, 2007. We are currently working to bring all systems back online gradually.”

A CRA press release dated March 6 [5] states “Commissioner of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Michel Dorais today instructed some computer applications related to personal income tax filing to be temporarily halted.” he also said, “there is no indication that this situation was caused by intrusion, hacking, or computer virus”. Further, “These applications include online services like Efile, Netfile, and My Account. Mr. Dorais said that he instructed that this preventative measure be taken following indications that CRA computer systems have run into infrastructure problems. In order to safeguard existing systems and to maintain the integrity of CRA’s taxpayer information holdings, Mr Dorais ordered tax filing processes halted.”

An article in The Globe and Mail [6] states that taxpayers “can wait for Netfile to return to service, or they can print their returns and mail them to the CRA”, which will be processed when the computer glitch is resolved.

The deadline for Canadians to submit tax returns is April 30. The CRA indicates it is too soon to speculate on whether the filing deadline will be extended. They expect to restore all services, including EFile and Netfile, well in advance of the filing deadline.[7]

The shutdown also affects third-party companies that prepare tax returns and electronically file the data using the EFile facility on behalf of clients. According to the CRA, millions of individual Canadians use the Netfile service each year.

The Agency will provide updates daily to the media until the situation is resolved.

Make Sure You’ve Got Mexican Car Insurance Before You Head South Of The Border

By Anthony Peck

It’s not uncommon at all for Americans and Canadians to take a quick trip across the border into Mexico. In fact, for people living in Arizona and California it’s simply a matter of hopping in their cars and heading south. If you’ve ever seen the line at the border you know what we’re talking about? The five million dollar question is, how many of those drivers bothered to pick up a Mexican car insurance policy first?

Yes ladies and gentlemen, that’s right. Your money might be good south of the border, but your car insurance coverage isn’t. While you might still be able to pick up some comprehensive or collision coverage within a certain number of miles from the good old US of A you’re not going to be able to use your liability coverage. And since Mexican authorities require you to have a minimum of $20,000 in liability coverage before you travel south of the border in your vehicle-well, you can see where this is going.

Fortunately, a good Mexican car insurance policy isn’t hard to find. There are plenty of companies out there that understand you’re not in Mexico for the long haul, which is why many organizations offer “day passes” for their insurance coverage. You have the choice of picking up a policy for a day, a month, six months or a year (or anywhere in between, depending on their policies). Bear in mind that like American car insurance policies, all Mexican insurance policies are a bit different. It’s wise to find out exactly how much coverage they offer before signing on the dotted line.

The smartest thing you could possibly do for yourself is make arrangements to purchase a Mexican insurance policy for the duration of your vacation before you leave the states. That ensures that you’re not leaving anything to chance, you’re never left sitting on the border hoping nothing happens and you don’t have to have your vacation marred by hunting around for an insurance carrier. If you didn’t pick up an insurance policy before you hit the road (or you’re reading this just a little too late) you can usually purchase insurance from an insurance agent in one of the border towns.

Whether it’s going to cost you more to do it when you’re already across the border has never been determined. Bear in mind, however, that while Mexico may thrive on its trade and tourism with the U.S. it has a no tolerance policy when it comes to Americans breaking their laws. Mexican policia have been known to have a “shoot first, ask questions later” approach to busting tourists without insurance (metaphorically speaking, of course). You could find yourself guilty until proven innocent and spending some time in the Tijuana prisons you hear so much about.

The bottom line is that you never, ever want to drive south without making sure you’re covered by a Mexican car insurance policy that picks up where your American insurance leaves off-right at the border.

Brisbane, Australia Magistrates Court charges two cotton farmers with $20m fraud

Thursday, August 30, 2018

On Tuesday, two officers of cotton farming conglomerate Norman Farming in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court for alleged fraud of the government. Queensland Police alleged over the past seven years the farmers submitted fraudulent claims to receive funding from Queensland’s Department of Natural Resources, resulting in an approximately AUD20 million dishonest personal financial gain. The Court laid charges and released the defendants on bail.

According to the results of the investigation by Police, the two men allegedly falsified documents, including invoices, misrepresenting work from contractors as earthwork supposedly in aid of improving water irrigation efficiency. The two allegedly presented farming-related work on their property on six projects as aimed at improving the efficiency of water irrigation at their property near Goondiwindi.

Police arrested the chief executive officer (CEO) of the conglomerate, 43-year-old John Norman, and the conglomerate’s chief financial officer, 53-year-old Stephen Evans. They appeared in Court represented by their lawyers. In the Court they were charged, Norman with six and Evans with four counts of aggravated fraud, Norman with six and Evans with four counts of fraudulently producing or using a false record. Police opposed bail, however the Magistrate released the two on bail conditionally, requiring they surrender their passports.

According to reports by Australian Broadcasting Corporation and The Guardian, neighbours of Norman Farming had complained to the authorities about Norman Farming’s work resulting in excessive removal of floodwater from the McIntyre river, leading to reduced availability of water for the farmers downstream.

Queensland’s Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy provided the funding as a part of its Healthy Head Waters scheme. Detective Inspector Mick Dowie said the Department did not have the authority of police to compel provision of documents, leading to difficulty with verifying the invoices which the two submitted in their application.

Dowie said the investigation took over a year to complete, including analysis of accounting reports.

Sarcastic Political T Shirts Let Activists Make Their Point

By Stacy Fox

Jake Greer and his girlfriend Katelyn Mosley are both wearing sarcastic political t shirts. His says ‘Obama Wants My Change – No New Taxes’ while hers reads ‘Vote For Social Security Reform – McCain’s going to need it.’

The two nineteen year olds make an interesting couple walking hand in hand down the Santa Monica Peer. Katelyn attends San Diego State University while Jake goes to the University of California at San Diego. Their political views are as different as their colleges. They have very different opinions about what the outcome of the 2008 presidential race should be.

‘I simply can not believe he’d support four more years of the same,’ Katelyn, an English major, says animatedly. ‘Obama brings real change for us.’

‘Yeah, change,’ Jake says pointing to his t shirt. ‘He wants all our money for social programs.’ Jake is an Economics major.

Jake supports the Senator from Arizona which is his own home state. But it’s not just local ties that bind. Jake says McCain understands the need to stand up to terrorists. Jake also fears that having both a Democratic Congress and White House will lead to higher taxes.

The couple does agree on one thing though. Sarcastic political t shirts are a cool way to express their political differences.

‘We keep looking for new ones to mix things up,’ Jake says.

‘Yeah, when I see one that is really going to make him mad, I buy it right away,’ Katelyn says, grinning.

Jake has a sarcastic political t shirt that makes Katelyn mad though. It says ‘Coming This Fall – Michelle Obama: Extreme Wife Makeover.’

‘He thinks it’s funny, but I think it’s just sexist. She’s a great woman who expresses her opinion. What could be more American than that?’

They agree to disagree and Jake says he’s mostly retired that t shirt on Katelyn’s behalf.

Because of advances in technology, there are more t-shirts than ever before – including the sarcastic political t-shirts Greer and Mosely like.

Now t-shirt companies can print only the shirts that are ordered rather than printing and shipping large batches. This gives the graphic artists that design the shirts much more latitude because they have to sell a smaller number before the design becomes profitable.

Also, a shirt can be designed and printed quickly. A candidate’s gaffe on the campaign trail can make it onto a t-shirt within 30 minutes of its uttering.

The campaigns produce t shirts to sell to their supporters, but they tend to be much more conservative. They feature red, white, and blue colors with the candidate’s name and sometimes an official slogan.

Sarcastic political t shirts sold online can be edgier. They can feature colors not necessarily associated with ‘patriotism’ and do takeoffs on popular culture references.

Sarcastic political t shirts sold online are also cheaper than the ones sold by the candidate with prices ranging from $15 to $25. The cheapest shirt on McCain’s official website is $35.

That’s good news for Katelyn and Jake who are building up quite a collection of sarcastic political t shirts.

‘You always have to go back and look at the internet for the shirts because there’s always something new,’ Katelyn says.

Looted, possibly contaminated body parts transplanted into USA, Canadian patients

Looted, possibly contaminated body parts transplanted into USA, Canadian patients

Monday, March 20, 2006

Fears of contaminated bone and skin grafts are being felt by unsuspecting patients following the revelation that funeral homes may have been looting corpses.

Janet Evans of Marion Ohio was told by her surgeon, “The bone grafts you got might have been contaminated”. She reacted with shock, “I was flabbergasted because I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I didn’t know I got a bone graft until I got this call. I just thought they put in screws and rods.”

The body of Alistair Cooke, the former host of “Masterpiece Theatre,” was supposedly looted along with more than 1,000 others, according to two law enforcement officials close to the case. The tissue taken was typically skin, bone and tendon, which was then sold for use in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. According to authorities, millions of dollars were made by selling the body parts to companies for use in operations done at hospitals and clinics in the United States and Canada.

A New Jersey company, Biomedical Tissue Services, has reportedly been taking body parts from funeral homes across Brooklyn, New York. According to ABC News, they set up rooms like a “surgical suite.” After they took the bones, they replaced them with PVC pipe. This was purportedly done by stealth, without approval of the deceased person or the next of kin. 1,077 bodies were involved, say prosecuters.

Investagators say a former dentist, Michael Mastromarino, is behind the operation. Biomedical was considered one of the “hottest procurement companies in the country,” raking in close to $5 million. Eventually, people became worried: “Can the donors be trusted?” A tissue processing company called LifeCell answered no, and issued a recall on all their tissue.

Cooke’s daughter, Susan Cooke Kittredge, said, “To know his bones were sold was one thing, but to see him standing truncated before me is another entirely.” Now thousands of people around the country are receiving letters warning that they should be tested for infectious diseases like HIV or hepatitis. On February 23, the Brooklyn District Attorney indicted Mastromarino and three others. They are charged with 122 felony counts, including forgery and bodysnatching.

Reasons Not To Get Cosmetic Surgery: Existing Health Condition

Submitted by: Rena Graham

If you want to have a safe and successful cosmetic surgery, you should acknowledge the importance of openly discussing with your surgeon any pre-existing condition that you may have. These types of procedures are invasive in nature and any ailments or diseases that you are probably suffering from can lead to fatal consequences if proper precaution was not made. Therefore be honest when it coming in for consults even if it could cost you your candidacy for surgery.

In the US and even in most countries one of the major causes of mortality are heart diseases. This could either be anatomical defects or any condition brought about by an unhealthy lifestyle. If you are suffering from cardiovascular problems, coordinate well with your physician and your cosmetic surgeon so that proper course of action can be made. A weak or faulty heart could be worsened if you subject it to the rigors of surgery, which could lead to a heart attack, that is why a thorough evaluation should be done.

Diabetes is also a common metabolic condition suffered by many today. The why this can put a patient at risk is that it can cause poor wound healing which can also lead to excessive bleeding. As a result, you are more prone to scar formations.

The good thing about this is that it can be controlled. However, decision should only be made once the condition is stabilized and your doctor and your surgeon agree that you are clear for surgery.

Any pulmonary problems that you might have should also be disclosed to your surgeon. Since surgery often includes the use of anesthesia which is a potent depressant, there is a high chance that it weakens the pulmonary functions and could lead to arrest. Informing the surgeon ahead of time will allows him to coordinate with your primary physician to stabilize the problem before giving your pulmonary clearance for surgery.

Obesity can also be a big issue (no pun intended) in cosmetic surgery. Doctors would never advise on going ahead with any surgical procedure on someone who is morbidly obese. No, this is not discrimination, but rather a safety precaution to avoid any complications.

The safety of your cardiovascular system, pulmonary system, and even good aesthetic outcome could suffer if cosmetic surgery is done on someone who is obese. That is why surgeons advise patients to bring gradually down their weight and stabilize it before coming in again for another consult.

If you are having trouble quitting vices such as smoking, alcohol and drugs, then you might rethink your cosmetic surgery first not until you manage these. You are at least 20 times more vulnerable to complications if you regularly smoke, excessively drink alcohol, or take recreational drugs. They contain chemical components that affect the blood oxygen level or its ability to clot. This can place you at risk for poor wound healing, scars, and bleeding.

Keep these vices at bay for at least four weeks before your cosmetic surgery and a few more weeks after that so that you heal properly an in a timely manner.

Any bleeding disorders should also be disclosed to your surgeon. This is very important considering the nature of the procedures involved. Even the slightest incision can create disastrous results if you do not warn your surgeon ahead.

Richard Hammond injured in jet-powered car crash

Wednesday, September 20, 2006

Richard Hammond, a British television presenter known for presenting shows such as Top Gear and Brainiac, is in a “stable” condition in hospital following a car accident during filming for Top Gear. He was injured when the jet-powered car he was driving crashed during filming for the former. The car, similar to the “Vampire” which holds the British land speed record, overturned whilst being driven at speeds of up to 300 miles per hour at Elvington airfield near York, in what was suggested to be an attempt at bettering the previous record. It has been suggested that he succeeded in a previous attempt. Emergency services were called to the scene at 5.45pm local time (16.45 UTC).

He was airlifted to the specialist neurological unit at Leeds General Infirmary. A former firefighter who was providing fire safety at the site and witnessed the accident said that Hammond was initially unconscious but able to speak when removed from the wreckage. At the time he indicated some pain in his lower back. Numerous eyewitnesses from the Top Gear crew claimed he was ‘helped into’ an air ambulance, suggesting he was conscious at the time. The ambulance service is reported to have said that Hammond was unconscious when they arrived at the scene, but began to regain consciousness upon arrival at the hospital.

The car was “very very badly damaged and in many pieces on the runway”, according to BBC News 24, reporting comments made by his colleagues.

A web sitehas been set up for well-wishers enabling them to donate to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. This site will accept donations until January 21, 2007. As of 23.09 (UTC) 21st September 2006 (day 2) £52,239.90 had been raised, surpassing the original target of £340.00 and well past their target of £51,000 (150 flights) that was set in the past few days.
