Australia’s Department of Defence spent thousands of dollars on controversial development seminars, Australian media reported Wednesday. The seminars are run by a San Francisco, California-based training company called Landmark Education. The company evolved from Erhard Seminars Training “est”, and has faced criticism regarding its techniques and its use of unpaid labor.

Australia’s Defence Minister Warren Snowdon said that the government is in the process of reviewing Defence Department expenditures on career development. “We’re in the process now of doing an audit, completely unrelated with anything to do with Landmark, which is being undertaken into learning and development to make sure that they meet our needs. … We have to be very sure that the courses that people do undertake are relevant, appropriate and indeed in line with what community expectations might be,” said Snowdon in an appearance on ABC Radio.

We’re in the process now of doing an audit, completely unrelated with anything to do with Landmark, which is being undertaken into learning and development to make sure that they meet our needs.

The Australian and Australia’s ABC News reported that Landmark Education had been listed in France as a “possible cult” in the mid 1990s. When asked about this on ABC Radio, a spokeswoman for the company in the United States, Deborah Beroset, responded: “What happened in France was that a commission established by the French parliament issued a report in which they listed almost 200 organisations as being possible cults … We were never contacted. We were inappropriately included in that list”.

In a program which aired Wednesday, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio program AM reported that Australia’s Defence Department spent at least AUD12,270 of taxpayer funds to send government employees to Landmark Education courses. According to AM, the Defence Department said it does not appear that further funds have been sent to Landmark Education since 2004.

In a statement released by the Defence Department, the government stated: “A search of Defence records does not indicate exactly how many individuals attended courses with this training provider, however it is believed it was a small number of individuals. … Defence has been unable to determine individual reasons for why groups within Defence choose this training provider.”

AM also reported that the use of unpaid labor by Landmark Education “has attracted the attention of the US and French governments,” and that some individuals in the mental health field have accused the company of brainwashing. When asked about the allegations by mental health experts that Landmark Education’s techniques amounted to brainwashing, Deborah Beroset responded: “Well, there is absolutely no credence to that whatsoever.”

Decisions on the appropriateness of staff attending courses by Landmark Education are made by individual managers who remain best-placed to assess the development needs of their staff.

In a March 9 article in the Herald Sun, Peter Rolfe reported that taxpayer money was used to send at least 37 police and government staff from Victoria, Australia to seminars run by Landmark Education. Police and Emergency Services Minister Bob Cameron said that “Decisions on the appropriateness of staff attending courses by Landmark Education are made by individual managers who remain best-placed to assess the development needs of their staff,” but State Liberal MP Murray Thompson told the Herald Sun that the funds should have been put towards fighting crime. Apple Inc., Reebok, and Mercedes-Benz have sent employees to Landmark Education seminars, according to a spokeswoman for Landmark.

In October 2006, Landmark Education took legal action against Google, YouTube, the Internet Archive, and a website owner in Queensland, Australia in attempts to remove criticism of its products from the Internet. The company sought a subpoena under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in an attempt to discover the identity of an anonymous critic who uploaded a 2004 French documentary of the Landmark Forum to the Internet. “Voyage au pays des nouveaux gourous” (Voyage to the Land of the New Gurus) was produced by Pièces à Conviction, a French investigative journalism news program. The Electronic Frontier Foundation represented the anonymous critic and the Internet Archive, and Landmark withdrew its subpoena in November 2006 in exchange for a promise from the anonymous critic not to repost the video.

Landmark Education is descended from Erhard Seminars Training, also called “est”, which was founded by Werner Erhard. est began in 1971, and Erhard’s company Werner Erhard and Associates repackaged the course as “The Forum” in 1985. Associates of Erhard bought the license to his “technology” and incorporated Landmark Education in California in 1991.

College Term Papers by Writing Services

by

Cyrus Bradford

Teenage may or may not be the age of innocence, but it’s definitely the age of ignorance. People laugh at their juvenile mistakes during these years, but commit new mistakes. This is also the time, when they get enrolled in colleges. This new life is way different from their sophomore years; the good sides of it are the freedom to hang out with friends, partying and clubbing. On the downside however, there’s

college term papers

.

Writing a term paper for an academic year in college is difficult; at least that’s what most students think, and to a large extent, they’re right. It is difficult mainly because college students are slow learners. It takes time for them to pick up the gist of a subject and make ready a persuasive write-up on it. But that’s exactly what’s needed to write a college term paper. Expertise apart, deadline is also a concern for students. They are to submit college term papers

within a stipulated time period. Having no other option at hand, students mug up with whatever is available and try to be done with the term paper as quickly as they can. This hampers the quality of the paper.

A badly written term paper can put students into problems. A deficient term paper has problems in each single area; it fails to address the topic properly, its style isn’t engaging, it doesn’t delve deep into the subject and is too abrupt. College term papers

, written in such ways portray the writer as someone, who can’t develop ideas properly or can’t give those ideas a shape. Either way, the reader is going to have a negative opinion about the writer. To the chagrin of students, those are not just any readers, rather holding faculty positions in different colleges and universities. So, they are the evaluators of the term paper. If they give the paper bad credit, that can hurt the student’s GPA for the academic term. Still there are chances for him to improve in the ensuing terms and have a decent cumulative GPA, but as always, it’s wise not to risk.

Instead, students can hire writing services and have the term paper written by them. Some people don’t like this idea because developing a write-up from scratch independently is good for a student in the long run. If from the very beginning, his works are being done by someone else, then it impedes his future growth as an academician. There’s some truth involved in this opinion. But whoever holds this, is not a student and so, can’t be receptive to problems of students. Scoring good marks in the exams lead a student to pursue a rewarding career and term papers help a student to score well in exams. Understanding this, students these days contact writing services for their college term papers

. It’s not like they do it in term after term, but when they really need a handsome score and don’t have time to put for achieving that. In such situations, writing services are a viable option.

Such services can be found by searching over web. Most of them vouch to send off the term paper immediately. These services have different rate and usually charge students on per-page basis. So, a research on the internet is required to find such companies.

There are various companies that have in house writers with subject matter knowledge and proficiency in helping students write research papers,

college term papers

, custom term papers and essays. Cyrus Bradford as a content writer researches and brings forth valuable information about such companies for readers.

Skype suffers downtime in Europe

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

The instant messaging (IM) and VoIP communications company Skype has suffered from an unexpected outrage across Europe since 10:00 AM UTC today. Users were not able to log in and Skype did not announce a cause of the problem.

Skype initially left a message on its website and Twitter which reads, “A small number of you may have problems signing in to Skype. We’re investigating the cause, and hope to have more details to share soon.”

It was suggested by many users that Microsoft might be related to the Skype behaviour, however the purchase of Skype by Microsoft is not yet completed — Microsoft do not currently have any operational control over the Skype servers.

Skype investigated a similar issue two weeks ago, its solution for which included an automatic update. This update deleted a file called “shared.xml” on users’ computers. While it seemed to resolve the issue, the reason for this was not clear. Online newspaper The Register reports that today’s issue is not dissimilar from that experienced previously.

Further investigation by Skype showed that the event was caused by “configuration problems”, but Skype has not published further details. The situation was claimed to be “stabilizing” by Skype later in the evening.

Case against Karr dropped: no DNA link to JonBenet Ramsey murder

Case against Karr dropped: no DNA link to JonBenet Ramsey murder
No Comments »

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Prosecutors have withdrawn their case against John Mark Karr, the man who confessed to killing JonBenet Ramsey in 1996, as DNA tests do not place him at the crime scene.

“The people would not be able to establish that Mr. Karr committed this crime despite his repeated insistence that he did,” District Attorney Mary Lacy said in court papers. Lacy also said that prosecutors found no evidence placing Karr in Boulder at the time of the killing. She also vowed to keep pursuing leads in the murder, saying, “This case is not closed.”

Karr will remain in custody in Boulder until he can be sent to Sonoma County, Calif., to face child pornography charges dating from 2001.

According to reports by MSNBC and KUSA, a local television station in Denver, Colorado, tests performed on DNA samples taken from Karr do not match samples recovered from Ramsey’s body.

On its website, KUSA says it “has confirmed from two sources that the DNA taken from John Mark Karr, 41, does not match the DNA samples taken from the crime scene in the JonBenet Ramsey murder case. No charges will be filed against Karr in connection with the Ramsey case by the Boulder County District Attorney’s office.”

DNA from Karr’s hair and saliva were tested in the Denver, Colorado Police Department’s lab over the weekend.

“This information is critical because … if Mr. Karr’s account of his sexual involvement with the victim were accurate, it would have been highly likely that his saliva would have been mixed with the blood in the underwear,” said Colorado District Attorney, Mary Lacy. Lacy noted that Karr had become a suspect after exchanging e-mail with a professor in California.

Karr’s attorney has requested that all DNA evidence be handed over to the defense for examination. His attorney has also requested additional testing of Karr’s DNA; however, there is confusion about who represents Karr. Seth Temin, a public defender claims to represent Karr, but at least two other attorneys in California, Jamie Harmon and Patience Van Zandt, are also claiming to represent him.

“The warrant on Mr. Karr has been dropped by the district attorney. They are not proceeding with the case,” said Timen. “We’re deeply distressed by the fact that they took this man and dragged him here from Bangkok, Thailand, with no forensic evidence confirming the allegations against him and no independent factors leading to a presumption he did anything wrong,” added Timen.

JonBenét, a beauty queen, was found beaten and strangled to death in her Colorado home on the day after Christmas in 1996.

In a press conference earlier this month, Karr confessed to being with JonBenét when she died, adding that her death was an accident. “I was with JonBenét when she died. I loved JonBenét. She died accidentally. I am so very sorry for what happened to JonBenét. It’s very important for me that everyone knows that I love her very much, that her death was unintentional, that it was an accident.”

Despite his confession, Karr’s then ex-wife said that he was in Alabama with her when the murder occurred.

Friday, December 19, 2008

Camera company Polaroid has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States. The firm, famed for the introduction of instant photography, says alleged fraud by the founder of their parent group is to blame.

Owned since 2005 by Petters Group Worldwide, Polaroid says that the group’s founder Tom Petters is “under investigation for alleged acts of fraud that have compromised the financial condition of Polaroid.” Authorities believe Petter, currently in police custody, was running fraud worth £3 billion, something he denies.

Petters Group, itself, filed for bankruptcy in October. Both firms now face restructuring, which Polaroid is confident won’t affect daily operations — in fact, the company is “planning for new product launches in 2009,” and claims to have “entered bankruptcy with ample cash reserves sufficient to finance the company’s reorganization under Chapter 11.”

Polaroid has further said that employees will be paid without interruption, and that while members of Petters Group are under investigation for fraud, Polaroid’s management is not. The company, based in Minnesota, also has subsidiaries which will enter bankruptcy with it.

In a major restructuring plan, Sony announced that approximately 7% of their workforce will be laid off between now and March 2008. Nearly 4,000 of the job losses will be in Japan itself.

The plan to try and revitalise the company is the brainchild of Sir Howard Stringer, the company’s first ever non-Japanese CEO. Apart from the job losses, eleven of the company’s 65 manufacturing plants will be closed or put up for sale. Restructuring follows considerable stock price falls over the last five years with the share value reduced to less than 40% of the 2000 value.

As well as announcing restructing plans, Sony announced an expected loss of 10 billion yen (US$ 90 million) during the current financial year.

The UK’s Prince Harry of Wales is to be presented with a humanitarian award for Distinguished Humanitarian Leadership by the Atlantic Council, according to an announcement made by St James’s Palace today.

The recognition is for serving war veterans and the armed forces. He is to receive the award in Washington, D.C. on May 7 at the Atlantic Council’s yearly awards dinner.

Prince Harry means to accept the award on behalf of his brother, the Duke of Cambridge, and the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry, an effort established in 2009 that enables the princes to advance their philanthropic aspirations.

“Prince Harry will use the award to pay tribute to British and American veterans’ charities for their achievements in helping to rehabilitate wounded servicemen and women, and to reintegrate those who have served in the armed forces into civilian life,” said a St James’s Palace spokesperson.

Prince Harry also supports other charities including Help for Heroes, Army Benevolent Fund, and Walking With The Wounded. He also helps run Sentebale, an organization that supports underprivileged children in Lesotho, Africa.

Saudi military attacks Yemeni rebels

Saudi military attacks Yemeni rebels

Saturday, November 7, 2009

Saudi Arabian military forces have continued their five-day attack against Yemeni rebels, leaving seven Saudis and an unknown number of Yemeni dead, according to the state news agency. The military has stated that only rebel forces on Saudi soil have been attacked, in contradiction with previous reports. Rebels have claimed that the military have targeted Yemeni villages.

An official at Samtah’s district hospital listed seven Saudis, of which four women civilians, as dead and 126 wounded since fighting began. He said Friday had been the “heaviest day” for casualties since Tuesday, leaving two soldiers dead and many wounded. According to Saudi media, rebel shelling killed the women, who were all from the same family.

According to the Saudi government the fighting began when rebels killed a Saudi border official and wounded eleven, going on to capture an area in the province of Jizan, though rebels say that border clashes had started earlier. The latest attacks took place after rebels disguised as women entered Saudi border villages on Friday night.

Rebels claim that Saudi ground troops have entered Yemeni territory, and that they have captured soldiers. They stated on their website that “[w]ith Allah’s help, the Saudi tyrannical advance into Yemen’s territory has been defeated […] A number of its troops have been captured and several military vehicles and supplies been seized.”

The Saudi government responded that the airstrikes were on Saudi border territory to repel the rebels, although on Thursday a Saudi government adviser informed reporters that jets had bombed rebel camps within Yemen with the Yemeni government’s blessing.

Relief agencies are concerned about providing aid to the tens of thousands displaced since the latest offensive started on August 11.
